Vitalik Buterin Proposes Ethereum Gas Limit for Security

EIP-7983, co-authored by Vitalik Buterin and Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstaetter, proposes a gas limit of 16,777,216 per transaction to improve Ethereum’s stability and security. The change would prevent quadratic attacks, facilitate zero-knowledge proof integration (zk-SNARKs), and make zkVMs more predictable. Currently, Ethereum has no per-transaction gas limit, only a per-block limit (~36M gas). The proposal also addresses historical vulnerabilities, such as DoS attacks in 2016, and aligns with Ethereum’s long-term scalability goals. Gas fees fluctuate with network activity, with basic transactions costing ~$0.18 and swaps averaging $2.37. Ethereum’s price, at $2,550, remains down 14% YoY despite recent upgrades.
