Hiep Nguyen, a 65-year-old Houston resident, fell victim to a sophisticated scam that drained his $500,000 life savings. Posing as the Vietnam Embassy, fraudsters convinced him his identity was linked to crimes abroad, pressuring him to wire his funds to ‘clear his name.’ Using encrypted messaging app Viber, they sent fake government documents to appear legitimate. Nguyen’s daughter, Kathy, is now supporting him and warns others to protect elderly family members from such scams. The FBI has been notified, but the perpetrators remain at large.
