Lesa Heebner has been elected as the new chair of the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) for a two-year term. This decision was made following a board vote on January 10, marking a significant moment in her long-standing involvement with the organization.

Heebner, who has served as a primary board member for 14 years and previously held the position of second vice chair, takes over from Nora Vargas. In her new role, she is committed to:

• Improving the agency’s internal operations
• Ensuring transparency for both the Board and the public

As chair, Heebner will oversee important infrastructure projects, including the long-awaited rail realignment project in Del Mar. This project involves selecting a route for a new inland tunnel. Additionally, San Diego City Councilmember Joe LaCava has been elected as vice chair, emphasizing the need for collaboration among board members and regional partners to meet community needs. Santee Mayor John Minto has also been elected as Second Vice Chair, highlighting the importance of aligning efforts to create vibrant communities for all residents.
