Andreas Thiel’s feature film “Kalbermatten” is currently facing significant financial challenges following its opening weekend. The film’s attendance has been disappointing across various Swiss cities, leading to concerns about its future viability.
The film drew an average of just 28 viewers per cinema, with the highest turnout occurring in Lucerne, where around 50 people attended. With production costs estimated at about six million Swiss francs, Thiel acknowledges that recovering these expenses in the Swiss market seems unlikely. Generating 150,000 Swiss francs in revenue would be considered a success, yet it still leaves a considerable shortfall.
Despite these financial hurdles, Thiel remains committed to his ambition of establishing the largest private film studio in Switzerland, located in Regensdorf. Once a respected satirist, he has faced public rejection, which may have influenced his decision to create “Kalbermatten” as a means to regain social recognition. The success of this project could have a profound impact on his future in the cultural landscape, especially as he navigates the potential consequences of a million-dollar loss.
